Content editors can now move independently
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is a government-subvented body that markets and promotes Hong Kong as a travel destination worldwide. Hong Kong is recognized as the world’s premier Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) destination, and the HKTB’s goal is to enhance visitors’ experience once they arrive.
In 2008, the Meetings and Exhibitions Hong Kong (MEHK) office was established by the HKTB to provide one-stop support for MICE organizers to make any size of event a success. HKTB was looking to reduce costs of creating and changing web pages, including indirect costs such as standby time. As the technical difficulty required to create websites increased, HKTB wanted to reduce the load on the website creation teams.

The Challenge
The Challenge
Heavy IT involvement required
HKTB’s previous CMS required the IT team to update the website. They wanted to reduce this reliance on IT and allow editors to edit content directly. They needed a CMS that provided fast time-to-market and could support their needs. Magnolia was able to meet their demands.
The Solution
The Solution
Localized content for multiple languages
The MEHK website needed to be localized in five different languages (English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese) for their target audience. Magnolia was able to support this requirement as Mirum, the agency that implemented Magnolia, was able to integrate with various translation providers, including free and paid ones.
Magnolia could integrate with all translation services that HKTB uses, including free and mature solutions like Google, Semi-free solutions like Microsoft, and paid and highly professional products like translation.com. The biggest challenge was the need for multilingual content management as the website is localized in five languages.
Through Magnolia’s various translation management functions, HKTB could leverage Manual entry, Automatic translation from Google/Microsoft/translation.com, and batch upload translated content.
Also, when an urgent piece of content is published, and the localized versions are not available yet, a temporary translated text can be displayed with a disclaimer that it is “not that accurate” and prompt the audience to refer to the original English version instead.
The Result
The Result
Swift turnarounds and faster time to market
HKTB has increased efficiency since implementing Magnolia. Since the website templates support faster translation and localization, resulting in lower costs and turnaround time. The marketing team can achieve a quicker time-to-market without relying on IT, and there has been an improvement in consistency and comprehensive experiences for all audiences on a single platform across different languages.
Important information and notices can instantly be delivered to website visitors in a pre-set approval flow without a lengthy communication and development process. The ease of system migration and integration also helps reduce the cost of IT operation teams on sourcing new tools and agencies for managing different projects and types of content.
